Great journeys of our time number 42

So, while you all wait for the snow in the UK, we have found it!

We started off tossing a coin, at six a.m. “Motorway or A25, country route to Gatwick?” and the motorway won. Fine until we joined the M25 and that stomach churning sign, “Motorway closed ahead.”  Really? Sign number two, “Motorway closed ahead.” Bugger. We panic and swing off at Chertsey and enter the unknown. Lucky, because it was actually closed at the A3, which was the very next junction, for those not too familiar with the M25 and why the hell should you be? The back routes to Woking, were alright albeit a bit slow and heading for Guildford, magically a sign for Dorking popped up and we were able to find the route we would have taken, had the coin tossing gone the other way. We had allowed ourselves plenty of time, so we still made Gatwick by about 7-45, for a flight not scheduled till 10-45. Parked in the long stay, bus to the terminal, check in with Easy Jet and through customs, involving a thorough search of Malcolm 🕺by, for a change, some very pleasant smiling border people and good morning breakfast. Slight delay while we waited for the de-icer to attend to the wings and away. A nearly full flight; why am I always so surprised? A ten out of ten landing, one of the best for a while and express service from Avis and hello hire car.

And so to Gruyeres, looking familiarly snowy. The town almost as quiet as before Christmas. Dinner was for once quite cheap, but we did eat cheap food! Two Rosti’s and salad, two drinks each and two coffees and behold £52! A bargain.

Laura and Hannah, hopefully arrive safely tomorrow and travel while Mary bakes a birthday cake. Sleep well, I know we will; cough permitting.

Malcolm and Mary

Malcolm worked for LWT. Mary worked for TRL. They live near Camberley in Surrey and did achieve their life long ambition to visit New Zealand. They have two daughters Laura and Hannah and two grandchildren Zach & Safi. Having done the big trip they then went to Canada, which was amazing. Scroll down it’s all here. They have visited Venice that they both so fell in love with in 2009 again. And recently returned to Lefkada for one week in glorious sunshine. Where next? Well, Canada is calling again in 2019; this time including Alaska. So stay tuned if you enjoy the ups and downs of travelling.

  1. Pah! Call that snow? You ain’t seen nothing till you seen Yateley this morning! A massive, and I mean massive, whole 2 inches of the stuff, almost life threatening. Oh and by the way I would never attempt to go to Gatwick without using Waze satnav!

  2. Ah, did wonder if you’d get caught by the M25 closure. It didn’t open till around 1PM. Glad you got through, hope the celebrations go well! Meanwhile its snowing here!!!
